"Dieticians said food supplements were not given" - a shortage of staff?
Healthcare Commission investigation p.47
"Four hundred and ninety eight patients were thought to have acquired C. difficile at Stoke Mandeville Hospital between April 2003 and March 2006 (as symptoms related to the infection developed after they had been in the hospital for at least 72 hours); 127 of these patients died."

DFW: "What about the other antibiotics vancomycin,
rifampicin, gentamicin, and linezolid? Are they authorised
by the MHRA as licensed medicinal products?
MHRA: "Vancomycin is indicated in potentially life-threatening
infections which cannot be treated with other effective, less
toxic antimicrobial drugs, including the penicillins and cephalosporins.
"Vancomycin is useful in the therapy of severe staphylococcal
infections in patients who cannot receive or who have failed
to respond to the penicillins and cephalosporins, or who have
infections with staphylococci resistant to other antibiotics.
"Vancomycin is used in the treatment of endocarditis
and as prophylaxis against endocarditis in patients at risk
from dental or surgical procedures.
" Its effectiveness has been documented in other infections
due to staphylococci, including osteomyelitis, pneumonia, septicaemia
and soft tissue infections. Vancomycin may be used orally for
the treatment of staphylococcal enterocolitis and pseudomembranous
colitis."

| DFW: "...thank
you ... there is nothing on the list about Manuka
honey dressings, or silver
wound dressings, or essential
oils. To the best of my knowledge, all
these are now acceptable to the Dept of Health and NHS
hospitals, community nurses (and of course holistic health
practitioners and individuals around the world) - for
treating patients with HCAIs and MRSA. These products
are widely available.
So I thought it would be best to ask you first whether
they were forgotten about when the list was being researched
and prepared by the MHRA. Please could you let me know..."

MHRA: "Glad to be of help. I can only give you
details of LICENSED medicinal products. The other products
you mention are not licensed medicines."
19.09.05
MHRA: "The NHS uses many unlicensed products, but
practitioners do so at their own risk. In the case of
honey dressings, the risk is obviously low - unless
the patient has a life-threatening infection." |

Maggots:

MHRA: "Although maggots have been classified as 'medicinal
products' there are currently no 'licensed maggots'. I believe
those that are used in hospitals are produced as 'specials' under
a special manufacturing licence for unlicensed medicines. Medicinal
leeches are similarly classed as medicines but they aren't licensed."

Bacteriophage:
DFW to MHRA: "Hopefully you could again help with this question - theoretically:
Now that primary wound dressings with active honey e.g. Activon Tulle are routinely prescribed on the NHS as medical devices, is it possible for primary wound dressings with active phages to also be on the list of medical devices?"
MHRA to DFW:
"In theory these would be either a medical device or a medicine in combination with a medical device. This can only be determined when we receive full specifications and any claims made for the product from the manufacturer. Whether the NHS would put it on their list is a matter for them to determine."
Special Licences: As with any unlicensed
medicines in the UK, phage can be prescribed to a named patient by GPs and dentists who agree to take
the responsibility with informed consent. We can provide the contact details for licensed wholesale dealers/importers.
Clinics in Poland, the Republic of Georgia and Texas welcome
patients with various bacterial infections that no longer respond to antibiotics,
and are successful with tens of thousands of patients and no harmful effects.
In
Germany phage therapy is applied for individual
cases of MRSA. Ref: Financial Times Germany
Free phages in food:
'Without knowing we constantly consume phages with our fermented food in yogurt (Brüssow et al., 1994),
sauerkraut (Lu et al., 2003b),
pickles (Lu et al., 2003a) or
salami (Chibani-Chennoufi et al., 2004c)'

Protective effects were most pronounced in children younger than 3 years. Note, however, that this apparently well-designed study was documented in a 75-line publication written in Russian containing a single table (Babalova et al., 1968).' ..."

free phages? Questions to the MHRA 25.8.06
DFW: 1. Is it legally OK for someone to bring back to the UK a phage preparation for their own use or as a gift?
MHRA: Yes
DFW:2. Is it legally OK for people in the UK to be sent free samples of phage preparations (not necessarily for medical use but for food use - or simply educational purposes)?
MHRA: Yes - but probably not unsolicited mail shots which could be construed as advertising or promotion of the product.

Activated oxygen/Medical Ozone
F.Fennell, Activated Oxygen Ltd.:
"We met a number of interesting people at the conference
and exchanged information with them. Many infection control personnel
were surprised to find our products and treatments as they had seldom
considered Medical Ozone as an approach in treating patients. It
is believed this has stimulated interest in further research into
the field. We are planning to attend some universities in the near
future to eradicate biofilms of various types in the laboratories."
Lord Colwyn: "...There is no doubt that ozone therapy will play an increasingly important role in healthcare in the future. Now is not the time to explain how controlled exposure to minute amounts of ozone can immediately halt the process of dental decay and eliminate the use of the dental drill. The prospects for primary dental care are enormous."

Bio-active copper textiles - antimicrobial face masks
"We are the bacterial warfare product."
"We're going to save a lot of lives."
Jeff Gabbay
Jeff with Hillary Clinton, US Senate, 2005
HCAI, MRSA etc.: "We have the same kind of thing
that we've done for surgeons."
"Sheets that kill bacteria will go a long way towards solving
the problem of infections acquired in hospitals."
Bird flu: "so the mask that we have will kill - actually
destroy the virus when it comes in contact with it." "This
is a mask that is going to cost almost the same as a normal mask."
"This will be made for general distribution."
"
Skin infections: Bioactive copper socks are now standard issue for US
Marines - "the rough and tough guys are wearing our socks"
- "no smell".
This technology bonds copper compounds to fabrics, paper
etc., therefore giving them powerful, long-lasting antimicrobial
properties without causing any harm - e.g. clothing for surgeons,
pyjamas, sheets.
